Hypnosis Myths!

Since it became popular, and a household name, hypnosis has undergone many changes and improvements. However, even though it is an even more powerful now than when it entered the public consciousness it still has many strange associations connected to it. Due to movies, television and negative media attention hypnosis has often be given a “bad rap”.

The simple truth is that the hypnotic state is one in which you find yourself several times a day and is in no way harmful to your health or damaging to your mind.

Here are some common myths about hypnosis that I will dispel in this short article.

Myth 1.
Hypnosis is evil.

This is a view that is held by a minority group of religious fanatics who do not understand nor have any experience with hypnosis or the hypnotic state. Hypnosis is a tool! Would you call electricity evil? Of course not! Yet this tool can be used to run useful appliances in your home or take your life depending on how it is used. Likewise you would not call a pitchfork evil! A pitchfork can be used to help irrigate and prepare a field for the growth of food that will nourish and sustain people but in the wrong hands it can become a deadly weapon.

Although hypnosis is entirely safe a lack of understanding and ignorance has lead some people to deem it as evil – it is merely a tool!

Myth 2.
Not everyone is hypnotizable.

This is a long held myth than even some people with hypnotic experience still hold. However, it is completely erroneous. Everyone can be hypnotized. The misunderstanding that only certain people can be hypnotized stems from stage hypnosis. When you watch a stage show that incorporates hypnosis for entertainment purposes you witness ordinary people doing strange and funny things. Only 5 % of the population can enter the extremely deep states of trance that are necessary to create the changes in them that you witness in a hypnotic stage show. However, this deep state of trance is not at all necessary to gain benefit from the use of hypnosis.

Myth 3.
You can be hypnotized to do things against your will.

This is one of the most damaging myths that exists about hypnosis. No one can force you to do anything against your will. You must be willing to follow the instructions of a hypnotist or his words will merely “fall on deaf ears”!

It is true that hypnosis is a powerful tool that can be used to easily and quickly change beliefs and form new ways of thinking and create new behaviours but only if you are willing and eager to create these changes. No one can force you to do anything you don’t want to or that goes against your morals, values or strongly held beliefs unless you want to change those things!

Hypnosis Myth 4.
You fall asleep or lose control during hypnosis

A trance state merely focuses your awareness and makes you direct your attention like a laser. You are more in control of your mind during a hypnotic session than you are in the normal conscious state!

The above hypnosis myths have damaged the reputation of this powerful tool for long enough and it is time they were eradicated from the collective consciousness. So, do not be afraid to try this tool for yourself because amazing things may just await you!
