Meditation Stool

Here are some things to look out for when choosing a meditation stool. These small seats have been used for thousands of years to ensure the meditator is in the optimum position for mentally disengaging from the body to deep the meditative practise.

It is very important to consider your needs and the objective of using a meditation stool before you make a purchase. As meditation practises differ greatly so do the functions of the meditation stool differ slightly!

A seat too high can create a sort of concave in the lower back generating strain. This back strain will eventually interfere with the meditation process redirecting your focus from your mental exercises to the readjustment of your posture and may well cause you to cut your session short.

However a higher seated position with forward tilt is more than acceptable. Just keep in mind that a slight forward tilt is okay as long as you are not slumped forward while hunching your back. Any type of back strain will cause physical difficulty and major discomfort over even short meditative periods. The whole point of a “traditional” stool is to ensure the correct posture and breathing so you can disengage your focus from your body and the surrounding environment.

The most popular meditation stools have rounded legs as this permits the mediator to attain the correct posture that is best for their physical height and weight. For this reason these stools are the most readily available and the cheapest.

A different style of meditation stool is an adjustable one. Adjustable stools are very often more costly than those with because each leg can be individually adjusted. This gives for a much more comfortable seat which in turn frees the mind to meditate to deeper levels.

The adjustable meditation stool also lets you alter the height and tilt of the seat effortlessly for maximum comfort. The extra cost is well worth the advantages that this type of stool offers. When you consider the fact that a meditation stool will last you a lifetime the price difference between a regular stool and an adjustable one becomes insignificant!

A fantastic benefits of having an adjustable stool is the fact that you can also use this type of meditation stool on uneven ground all you need to do is make some adjustments to the legs to even it out. Another plus with this style of stool is no tools are required to make any adjustments. It can all be loosened, adjusted and tightened by hand.

You may also use a small, sturdy piece of furniture as a meditation stool. For instance, a small coffee table can be adjusted to the right height and angle simply by cutting the legs off to the height that is most comfortable for you. Some meditation stool are manufactured and sold as meditation tables because they follow this design structure.

It is highly recommended that you look into purchasing a stool that can be easily accessible for everyday use, such as those with a folding style. Folding meditation stools are useful for those who wish to practice their devotions while travelling, or anyone who needs to pack up their stool and store it in between meditation sessions.

Along with the standard, most popular two legged stools, there are one-legged stools that have the leg positioned in the center of the underside of the stool. This style of meditation stool requires the mediator to balance while meditating.

Balancing during your meditation can be complicated to master and can therefore interfere with your mental exercises and focus. However, on the positive side, it allows you to remain aware of the present and your surroundings during each session if this is part of your meditation exercises. If the mediator looses their awareness of their surroundings, they will tip over.

Another thing to keep in mind while meditating for long periods is try to tighten and relax your abdominal muscles periodically. When you exhale, visualize you belly button touching your spine, this will not only work your abdominal muscles but it also helps you acquire the correct posture required for proper meditation. This is the very purpose of using a meditation stool as posture and breathing are very important to meditative practises.

If you are interested in deepening your meditative practises you should consider the benfits of using modern technology such as Holosync or binaural beats.
